You may wonder why I ask you to read to your child minutes each evening? It's because you are helping to develop their vocabulary and comprehension skills. When children read, they are often focusing on decoding words and following punctuation and sentence structure. When you read to them, it enables them to concentrate on the story (comprehension, vocabulary, etc.). For more advanced readers, reading a challenging book aloud to them develops advanced comprehension strategies and vocabulary which, if a love of reading is developed, will grow throughout their lifetime. Audiobooks when driving in the car are also very beneficial, especially if the subject interests the child and it would be a more challenging book for them to read.
